Telangana CM assures support to BrahMos Aerospace for its expansion
The Inception of BrahMos Joint Venture
The journey of BrahMos Joint Venture (JV) started on 12th February 1998 after the landmark signing of an Inter-Governmental Agreement (IGA) at Moscow between the Republic of India and the Russian Federation. The JV Company BrahMos Aerospace was formed by the amalgamation of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) of India and Joint Stock Company "Military Industrial Corporation "NPO Mashinostroyenia" of Russia.
The acronym 'BrahMos' represents the confluence of two great nations represented by the fury of Brahmaputra and the grace of Moskva rivers. The company was established with an authorised capital of $300 million in the ratio of 50.5% from Indian side and 49.5% from Russian side. The JV entity is responsible for the design, development, production and marketing of the BRAHMOS supersonic cruise missile system with active participation of a consortium of Indian and Russian defence enterprises.
The military-technical collaboration was made possible by the fusion of scientific and technical proficiency of DRDO and NPOM. DRDO had developed crucial systems like inertial navigation systems, mission software, mobile launchers for the Prithvi and Agni missiles. NPOM had expertise in the area of ramjet engines together with a number of technologies for space systems, launch vehicles and cruise missiles. The combination of these capabilities and competencies of both institutions gave birth to a successful world-class product - BRAHMOS, in a short time.
Both the Governments of India and Russia on 07th February 2014 agreed to continue their hallmark friendship and strategic partnership towards the BRAHMOS missile programme by extending the Inter-Governmental Agreement (IGA) for an indefinite period. The success of BrahMos has been possible due to the shared vision of pioneering leaders of both the partner nations to create a common culture and strategic relationship. The BRAHMOS programme has transformed the 'buyer-seller' relationship between the two strategic partner nations into 'co-developers' and 'co-producers' of a highly advanced weapon system in the world.
